ABSTRACT

During the COVID-19 pandemic, social media has acquired particular relevance. During periods of long confinement and lockdown, they have become spaces for entertainment and socialization. Within this digital ecosystem, TikTok plays a key role. It has grown remarkably during the past year and has become the most used social network by adolescents. In Argentina, Horacio Rodriguez Larreta, mayor of the City of Buenos Aires, joined TikTok in October 2020, becoming one of the first political figures to open an account. In less than a year, he amassed around 350 thousands followers and 5.4 million likes. In this article, we describe and analyze the communication strategies deployed by Rodriguez Larreta on TikTok between October 19, 2020, when he joined the network, up to September 19, 2021. We employ a qualitative methodology, with content analysis as our main tool, and focus on investigating the frequency, topics, attributes, and language of the videos uploaded by Rodriguez Larreta during his eleven months on TikTok. Our hypothesis is that the mayor of Buenos Aires used TikTok as a special channel to connect with young voters. This becomes obvious throughout our study, as we observe how he adapted his political communication - in both form and function - to align with the codes and language of this social network, placing special emphasis on his interaction with users.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 has generated a series of changes in the different spheres of our lives. These changes have been particularly visible in the education field, where it has been necessary to urgently rethink the training processes in terms of non-face-to-face. Based on this situation, this work presents a Flipped learning experience carried out with the first year's students of the Degree in Pedagogy of the University of Valencia. An analysis of student's prior conception of this methodology and its perception after completion of its implementation is also proposed, offering a transverse view. To this end, the information of the 107 participants has been collected through a validated instrument to analyze the usefulness of resources and methodologies based on three dimensions: communicative, instrumental and pedagogical. The results suggest that the perception of usefulness on the part of students is higher in the post-test than in the pre-test in all three dimensions. It also points out that, while in the pretest the highest score was associated with the instrumental dimension, in the post-test the highest usefulness is linked to the pedagogical dimension, materializing the importance of the participant's experience and the impact of flipped classroom on their learning.

ABSTRACT

Introduction. Alternative indicators based on web 2.0 have gained great relevance to measure the impact of scientific production. Positive correlations between traditional and alternative indicators have previously been shown. The objective of our article is to evaluate the relationship of these indicators in the field of surgery in our country. Methods. Retrospective analysis of the publications of the Colombian Journal of Surgery and tweets of the Twitter account (@ascolcirugia) during March 2020 and July 2021. Articles with and without tweets in the account @ascolcirugia were comparatively evaluated. The correlation between alternative indicators and traditional indicators of the journal’s publications was determined. Results. A total of 149 articles and 780 tweets were reviewed;only 13.4% (n=20) of the articles had visibility at the @ascolcirugia account, with a median of 2 tweets (RIQ 1-2) per article, most of which were on COVID-19 issues (85% vs 10%;p<0.001). The articles published at the @ascolcirugia account had a higher median number of downloads (220 vs 116;p<0.001) and citations (3.5 vs 0;p<0.001) compared to the articles that were not published. Conclusions. The use of social media has a positive effect on the number of readers of the Colombian Journal of Surgery and the academic impact of the authors. Although there is a good correlation between alternative and traditional indicators, in the national context, the proportion of articles of the Colombian Journal of Surgery published at the @ascolcirugia account is low. © 2022, Asociacion Colombiana de Cirugia.
